At each stage in the publication of his "American Empire Project" trilogy, renowned Japan expert and public intellectual Chalmers Johnson has visited the USF Center for the Pacific Rim to lay out his ideas for a Bay Area audience, and to engage in a discussion of the state of America today.
In September of 1999, just before the appearance of Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire, he spoke at the Center on the increasingly negative role played by the U.S. Japan Peace Treaty in Japan's re-emergence as a "normal" world power. In January 2004 Johnson returned to discuss Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic, the second volume in the series, in light of the war in Iraq. Most recently, in March of 2007, he was interviewed before an overflow crowd here about the culminating volume of the trilogy, Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic.
